How often have we heard the old maxim: The film is nothing like the book?

It is rare indeed to hear a book lover speak highly of a film that has been adapted from a favourite book. While I suspect that a degree of cultural and artistic snobbery comes into play here, there can be no doubting that for the most part, books and films give the consumer completely different variations on a theme, and are received with similarly distinct sets of values.
