[17] Westminster Man

Westminster man, that opinionated,
Self-centred cad of many words
Who talks to me
With pin-striped smile
And creaking shoes,
Never-ending slur on my belief,
The only God the dollar.
For I must listen to the hidden truth
Or be condemned to spiritual squalor.

Order, Order through the night,
Control your urge to arms.
For he shall lead us to the light
The light that turns to dark.
Having served us well
He disappears with the fatted calf.
Fortune favours the brave.
But wait, control your laugh,
He’ll leave his in the grave.

Who pulls the strings
When it’s our turn to choose?
They tell us we’re special
And promise great things
While the hacks pay their dues,
Voicing opinions,
Expounding their views,
Condemning the minions
With earth-shattering news.

But when it’s all over
Our lives, our hearts and minds
Must return to the fire
Which fuels the state.
And that Westminster man,
Cursed by the power
That leads him to hell,
Yet blessed by the wealth
That is his death knell.
