In a state of apoplexy
I knew it was no prank
I picked it up and read aloud
The letter from the bank

A brief perfunctory note
Signed by a man called Frank
Who did not read the letter
Whose words stuck in my throat

Calling to attention
The state of my account
Fifty pounds and overdrawn
A rather small amount

I telephoned a lassie
Smiled at me down the line
It’s about this banker’s letter
This overdraft of mine

Please tell me what my balance was
Last month at this same time
She went away and I did pray
I heard some keyboard sounds

She smiled again
I heard her say
You had five hundred pounds
Then may I ask
Your man named Frank
I shouted down the line
When you owed me
For all to see
Did I write to the bank?
